THE PERFORMANCE SPACE

Next to the activity area we are proposing a natural amphitheatre linking the parkland, hub and sport area to the river. This would need careful acoustic consideration both in terms of the existing road noise and limits on the level of amplification or the timing of performances in order to ensure there is no nuisance caused to the nearest residents. It would be hoped that with acoustic panels we might diminish the everyday road noise to neighbouring houses.

The area might include:

  • River access with a safe beach area designed to encourage users down to the water’s edge and for educational visits, this would need to be designed to withstand erosion during times of peak water.
  • A natural amphitheatre with earth seating for external acoustic performances
  • A band shell type structure across the river designed to incorporate a significant level of habitat creation aimed at improving our wildlife offering within the town.
  • Various fishing and observation points

Inspiration

Regent’s Park, London

An outdoor theatre set in the heart of London’s Regent’s Park is an ever popular ampitheatre space and even has its own box office, designed to blend in as part of the park with its green roof and landscaped planting. This award winning theatre comes alive in the 18 week summer season and entertains 140,000 people each year.

The Minack Theatre, Cornwall

A world famous outdoor theatre set into the cliff face above Porthcurno cove. Seating is carved out of the cliff and rock outcrops provide a natural backdrop for the actors to frame thier performance around. Beyond the ampitheatre and stage the sea gives a calm and peaceful setting. This is hugely successful and attracts thousands of people along with some of the best theatre companies. www.minack.com

Floating Cinema, Canal and River Trust

The floating cinema is in association with the Canal and River Trust and is a touring canal boat that travels along the Kennet and Avon canal pitching up in various suitable spots such as Kings Cross, London creating pop-up events that have proved very popular. Immersive film, music and experimental projection are among the displays possible from this touring venue that integrates the river into the event space.
